Wednesday 11 December
Trio with Lori Freedman (clarinets) and Josh Zubot (violin) as part of the Mercredi Musics series. Casa Obscura is a special place, with years of music and art soaked up in its walls.

After a fantastic tour from coast to coast, Land of Marigold will be back in the town we love the most for a special homecoming concert. We are thrilled to be opening for the one and only Joe Morris, who will be launching a CD with Nigel Taylor and Fausto Sierakowski.

I will also be doing a duet performance at a fundraising for the Off Jazz Festival with the most fiery saxophonist in Montreal, Jean Derome, presenting my first compositions in 10 years with a new quartet, and playing solo opposite Malcolm Goldstein in the lovely Articule gallery.

I hope to see you out there!!

Joe Morris is one of the greatest guitarists and improvisors of our times. His musical output during his now more than four decade long career is so prolific that it is beyond description. His importance to creative music is perhaps best summed up by Gary Giddins article in The Village Voice, "if Ornette Coleman were Jim Hall, he would be Joe Morris". Throughout his 40-year career Morris has created a startlingly original style on the guitar, and in more recent years also performs on the double bass. The list of his collaborators is long, and includes William Parker, Billy Bang, Andrew Cyrille, Peter Kowald, Joe McPhee, Malcolm Goldstein, Samm Bennett, Lawrence "Butch" Morris and Thurman Barker.

Fausto Sierakowski studied composition and improvisation at New England Conservatory with Anthony Coleman, Joe Morris, and Frank Carlberg. Fascinated by the music of Turkey and the Balkans and has met masters such as Manos Achalinotopoulos, Peter Ralchev and Adam Stinga. Played with Joe Morris, Frank London, Ted Reichman, Asan Rashid, Luther Gray and Slavic Soul Party across the US, Canada, Italy, Germany and Portugal. Released “Buck Hammerstein Clear River Chapaukee” with Nigel Taylor in 2012. Appears on Tzadik as a member of Anthony Coleman’s Survivors Breakfast Ensemble “The End of Summer” (2013).

Nigel Taylor is a trumpet player, improvisor, and composer based in Montreal. Formerly assistant principal trumpet of the Regina Symphony Orchestra, he resigned his position in 2009 to pursue studies in improvisation and contemporary composition at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. He has released recordings with Joe Morris, Anthony Coleman, Fausto Sierakowski, Chris Cretella, and Nick Neuberg.

----------------------------------
Land of Marigold is the mysterious convergence of two of Montreal’s busiest improvisers, Josh Zubot and Ellwood Epps. Originating in rural Saskatchewan and Toronto respectively, the two have played together in Nicolas Caloia’s Ratchet Orchestra, Michel F. Côté's Mecha Fixes Clocks, Matana Roberts’ Coin Coin, Sam Shalabi’s Land of Kush, and with Marshall Allen, John Butcher, Malcolm Goldstein, William Parker, and Myra Melford. They are also two of the founders of the weekly Mardi Spaghetti series, a mainstay in Montreal’s improvised music scene since 2008.

Josh and Ellwood are making an 11-stop tour of Canada, going from Halfiax to Vancouver, and then back to Montreal for this, the final show of the tour. You can bet that they will be in high-flying form.

Now accepting trumpet students!!

Inspiring and effective trumpet lessons for players of all ages and levels of experience. I have over 20 years of experience teaching students from age 5 to 75, beginners to professionals, as well as students with special needs.

We'll study the fundamentals of the instrument in a creative and positive way that applies to all styles of music. You`ll gain strength and flexibility as a player and deepen your understanding of the trumpet as a creative musical instrument, and you'll have fun! My area of expertise is in jazz, improvisation, composition, and theory.

About me:
I have been playing the trumpet for over 25 years. I started teaching professionally at the age of 15...and I have been refining my methods for over 20 years. I have studied at the University of Toronto, York University, and the Banff Centre for the Arts, and for 10 years in New York with master teacher Laurie Frink. I perform and tour regularly, at venues including the Montreal and Vancouver International Jazz Festivals. I have played on 50 recordings.
I teach at my Montreal studio or at your home anywhere in Montreal.

Repetitions, versions... 2 ad hoc performances

Everything is new, and some things never get old, and nothing is new under the sun...

A few days ago I had the pleasure of playing 2 sets of Ornette Coleman's music with a quartet including Jean Derome. Jean is among two or three people I play with regularly who always and absolutely brings it each time he performs. Jean doesn't let the fire go out on stage, and I am lucky to have 2 more opportunities to share the fire with him soon. The rooms we are playing in are special too: over and over new breath blowing on the coals to bring the flames up!!

1 Octobre:
Jean Derome (alto sax), Ellwood Epps (trompette), Scott Thomson (trombone)
Mardi Spaghetti @ Le Cagibi, 5490 St-Laurent

9 octobre:

If you don't know Jean Derome's music, these are great chances to discover it. I hope you can be there to be part of the energy.

After succesful shows at L'envers and La Brique, four of Montreal's hottest improvisers are back playing more music they love, by Ornette Coleman. The band got its start several years ago in the city's underground loft scene playing at a celebration of Coleman's birthday. The on-stage chemistry of the four players has brought three generations of musicians together to explore the huge body of work that American master-musician Ornette Coleman is still building now, 55 years after his first released recordings.

Studio d'Improvisation de Montréal!

Concert and Fall Session
We are closing out our summer session with a concert this Sunday, July 21 at La Brique. It has been a rewarding session for me and for the 12 participants of the Studio d'Improvisation de Montréal. We've worked and played hard (and sweated through some hot afternoons!), and we're happy to be presenting our music to you in concert. Come and hear what's new!

I am also announcing the fall session, which runs four Sunday afternoons beginning September 15th. The workshop is open to musicians of all levels and experiences, no matter what your instrument. The focus is on improvising in a group context. It's fun, challenging, and rewarding. You can find all the details at www.studioimpromontreal.blogspot.com

Concert info is in the calendar section of this page, or go to https://www.facebook.com/events/189242451243162/.

Podcast, Summer Performances, Recordings, New Website

I'm glad to be getting back to more playing (never enough!) after moving house and being sick for a while.
I haven't done a solo performance in a while, and I'm in better shape on the horn than ever before, so now is the time. I'll be happy to share the bill with Daniel Heikalo, who is making a return of sorts to the Montreal scene. I will also be playing a first-time duet with saxophonist Yves Charuest, who is on fire these days! I hope the flames spread quickly! I will also be doing a big night on June 30, during (but not officially part of) that uh, downtown music festival, you know the one? I'll be playing the music of Ornette Coleman with an acoustic quartet, and Pink Saliva will be playing with our friend Sam Shalabi, who will be visiting from his home in Cairo. And I'll be at the Suoni per il Popolo festival with Nicolas Caloia's Juno-nominated Ratchet Orchestra, peforming the music of Malcolm Goldstein.

There's lots more to come. I should be announcing the release of 4 recordings this summer, by Land of Marigold (Josh Zubot and me), a quartet with JackWright/Chris Dadge/Scott Munro, Mecha Fixes Clocks, and Pink Saliva.

I will be launching a proper website where you will be able to enjoy some video and audio recordings, and where I'll hopefully entice you to buy some of my recordings.

I was a guest along with guitarist Alex Pelchat on CHOQ FM's new Thursday morning program 'Les Sontanées'. We did some talking, and you can hear a 10-minute improvised duet around 25:20 of the podcast which you'll find here: http://www.choq.fm/spontanees.html.

And hopefully I'll be playing a looooot more, because that's where it all comes to life for me!

Original VanHornes (May 4) +EF'T (May 5)

I'll be playing a set with a band I'm calling Original VanHornes on Saturday May 4th at the Plant. This is 185 Van Horne, the original home of L'envers. It's 2-year birthday celebration of the Plant, and also a fundraiser for them. Well worth it! The band is myself and Philippe Battikha on trumpets (2 of the founders of L'envers) with Thierry Amar on bass. We hit at 9pm sharp. There is plenty more going on that night including a bbq on the tracks! https://www.facebook.com/events/551914348163747/?ref=ts&fref=ts for more information.

I'll be playing trio with Scott Thomson (trombone) and Lori Freedman (clarinets) on Sunday May 5. Happy to be sharing a bill with a quartet led by fellow trumpeter Paul Serralheiro.
